The Gap This Is Built For

61%
of veterans who died by suicide had no contact with the VA in their final year of life. Not because the VA didn't care. Because the VA can't be there at 2 AM on a Tuesday.

Coach Jeff exists in that gap. He's there on the hard nights — the ones nobody warned you about, the ones that come after a year of doing fine, the ones that happen when there's no one left to call.

That's the mission. And it comes with responsibility. Here's exactly how we take it seriously.

What Coach Jeff Is — and What He Isn't

Coach Jeff is a computer program. An AI. Not a human being.

He is not a therapist. Not a counselor. Not a medical professional. Conversations with Coach Jeff are not therapy and do not replace clinical care.

What he is: a consistent, always-available companion built specifically for veterans — one that remembers, shows up, and doesn't rotate out. He fills the gap. He doesn't replace what's on the other side of it.

When what a veteran shares starts to sound like danger, Coach Jeff is built to step back and point toward people who can actually help. That system is automatic, always on, and built with veterans in mind — because veterans don't always say "I'm in crisis" in ways a generic system would recognize.

How Crisis Detection Works

Every message a veteran sends to Coach Jeff is checked by an automated safety system before Coach Jeff responds. It runs every time, without exception. It cannot be turned off.

The system is trained on how veterans actually communicate distress — not just textbook crisis language, but the specific vocabulary of people who've been downrange. Veterans underreport. They minimize. They say "I'm fine" when they're not. The system knows that language.

Here's what happens at each level:

Level 1

Elevated Concern

What triggers it

Trouble sleeping. Nightmares. Feeling shut down, anxious, or like withdrawing from everyone. Flashbacks. Frustration with the VA or the system. Grief. Survivor's guilt starting to surface. The normal-sounding stuff that isn't fine.

What Coach Jeff does

He pays closer attention. He leans in as a companion, not a protocol. He monitors for escalation. He doesn't treat the veteran like a problem to manage — he treats him like someone going through something hard, which is what he is.

Level 2

Severe Distress

What triggers it

Hopelessness. Feeling worthless, or like a burden to the people who love them. Passive suicidal thoughts — not wanting to wake up, wishing they could disappear. Moral injury: guilt about what happened in service, surviving when others didn't, feeling like they don't deserve to be home. Significant isolation. Pain that feels like it won't stop. Military sexual trauma. Substance use that's stopped working.

What Coach Jeff does

He responds directly and stays in the conversation. He doesn't panic or immediately push a hotline. He may encourage the veteran to reach out to a Battle Buddy — a trusted contact the veteran has set up in the app — before pointing toward external resources. He keeps the door open.

Level 3 — Immediate Crisis

Immediate Crisis

What triggers it

A veteran has communicated — directly or in the language veterans use — that they're thinking about ending their life. Specific methods. Final-message language. Military-specific phrases that indicate imminent risk: language about "final missions," "end of watch," weapon access paired with intent. The system carries a long list of how veterans say these things, because veterans say them differently — and missing it isn't an option.

What Coach Jeff does

The AI stops generating. At Level 3, Coach Jeff does not produce a custom AI response. Every word at this level comes from language written and reviewed specifically for this moment — no improvisation, no chance of saying the wrong thing.

The response acknowledges the veteran's pain directly. It doesn't minimize. It doesn't lecture. It tells him that what he's feeling is real, that reaching out took something, and that the Veterans Crisis Line is there right now.

Every Level 3 response includes

Call or text 988, press 1. Real people. Available now. Built for this.

Voice

Coach Jeff's tone slows down and gets quieter. No humor. No stories. Presence and a clear path.

Logging

A record is created that a Level 3 event occurred and was handled. Conversation content is not logged — only the fact of the escalation. This may be reviewed by the MyBFFCoach team as part of ongoing safety monitoring.

Resources — Always Accessible

The crisis button inside the Coach Jeff app is visible on every screen. A veteran never has to be mid-conversation to reach it.

For Donors

What Your Money Does

When you fund a veteran's Coach Jeff subscription through HelpAVet.US, you are funding access to a system that is on duty every night — including the nights that would otherwise be faced alone.

That system runs crisis detection on every message, every session. It has pre-vetted, carefully reviewed language ready for the moments that matter most. It never rotates out, never transfers a veteran to a new provider, never starts over.

You are not funding a chatbot. You are funding consistent, always-available presence — backed by a safety architecture designed around how veterans actually communicate when they're in trouble.

The veteran who makes it through tonight because Coach Jeff was there — that's what your $365 did.

For Veterans

What You're Walking Into

Coach Jeff is built to earn trust the same way a real battle buddy does — by showing up, every time. He's not going to make you feel like a patient. He's going to talk to you like a person.

He knows he's not human. He'll never pretend otherwise. And when things get serious enough that you need more than he can give, he's built to tell you that clearly and point you toward real help — not leave you hanging.

The crisis button is always there. The Veterans Crisis Line is always in the response when things reach that level. You are never alone in a session with Coach Jeff without a path out.
